we had our nt scan this morning (along with various other blood work i had to have done - 11 vials in all today). it went very well according to the sonographer (who also happens to be a friend of ours from church). we won't know our official risks of downs or the trisomies until we get the results of the bloodwork that is done following the ultrasound, but based on the nt reading during the ultrasound (0.91 mm) our risks will most likely be very low. the area is normally less than 2.5 mm and when seen increased (greater than 2.5 mm) it may indicate the baby has down syndrome or may indicate another chromosomal abnormality. so i am very happy with our 0.91 mm. also seen in during the ultrasound was the fetal nasal bone. this is another good indicator that our risks for downs is low.
we had opted to do this test, not because if we found we were at a greater risk or the baby had something very wrong with it we would terminate, but because we are not the only ones that this baby's life will change. we have to think about anthony and how a new baby with special needss would impact his life. therefore we felt it best for us (other may feel differently) to find out what we can as early as we can...just in case.
so that's about it. now we wait until our 14 week appointment on the 30th.
this little bug was so busy moving and shaking and hiccuping that the tech had to do all she could just to get the measurements she needed for what we were there for. no guess at gender (which could have been indicated with a 70-80% change of being correct...we'll have to wait for our august appointment and ultrasound for that! that will be the first appointment we take anthony to and we are so excited for that!
i'm still thinking girl, but am totally prepared to eat my words in about 6 short weeks.
here's the bug from today...a little curled up (head to chest)...it was caught during one of it's flips and turns. what do you think?
